About us
“Land Data is the official government appointed organisation that manages and regulates the National Land Information Service (NLIS) contracts. Today NLIS carries the sole mandate of providing the only official electronic ‘front door’ for local authorities. Land Data’s role is to ultimately provide consumers, via NLIS, with official electronic land and property information at a fair price, safe in the knowledge that this information is from source and delivered through the only regulated, secure and national provider in England and Wales.”
Ian Swithenbank CBE, Chairman IDeA and Deputy Chair LGA Executive
Land Data is the leading authority on electronic land and property information required for conveyancing and is committed to making this information available to all.
We manage and regulate the National Land Information Service (NLIS), which provides electronic access to official sources of land and property information across the whole of England and Wales, via a hub and a number of electronically accessible channels.
NLIS was set up to support Local Authorities and other property information holders in their move from manual to electronic provision of property information. NLIS partners have been responsible for developing the electronic infrastructure to connect data providers with solicitors and licensed conveyancers. Through NLIS, they can access property searches from designated data providers including all local authorities in England and Wales, Land Registry, the Coal Authority and a number of water companies.
Currently approximately 15,000 solicitors and licensed conveyancers subscribe to the NLIS channels. Instead of submitting numerous, separate search requests in writing, a process which is labour intensive and time consuming, conveyancers can purchase an NLIS search online, which can be completed and returned sometimes within a matter of minutes. Since it began operation in 2001 more than 18 million searches have been processed by the NLIS Hub.
Part of our strategy is to expand the growing spectrum of information providers to NLIS as well as develop new and enhanced search services which will help improve the land and property information market.
Homebuyers whose conveyancers use NLIS not only benefit from a faster and more efficient service but are also safe in the knowledge that the searches are authoritative and fully comprehensive.
